Apr 2011: Hayley's on the Run

Hayley's on the Run

Commercial Chemist at Wastesafe, Hayley Hurdle, is training to run the 2011 Virgin London Marathon on April 17. As a diabetic of 16 years, she will be running for the Charity Diabetes UK, pledging to raise £1900 for this worthy cause.

The marathon efforts of the runners with type 1 diabetes carry extra difficulties because of the need to ensure that their blood glucose levels remain stable throughout training and the race itself. Without carefully monitoring food and insulin intake, people with type 1 diabetes run the risk of hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood glucose level) or hyperglycaemia (high blood glucose level), which of increases the likelihood of developing long-term complications.

"Running is something that doesn't come easy to me, but with regular training, I'm determined to complete the race in less than 5 hours" said Hayley.

Hayley will also be running the Reading Half Marathon on Sunday 20th March in preparation for the big day.
